Science Topics for Kids
Learning and teaching science can follow various approaches. One common approach is just start exploring by the science topic of greatest interest. What are science topics? The study of science is so large that scientists break it into primary fields or categories. These include chemistry, biology, earth science, physics, and applied science, which we call technology. Each field has smaller subject areas or topics. We can define science topics as particular areas of science with common elements.
Most science curriculum and teachers present science by topics so that we understand one area before going on to the next. High school students often learn science by topics all in the same field like biology, chemistry, and physics. Elementary students often learn science through topics from different fields.
All of us have areas of science that interest us more than others. For example, I may be interested in chemical reactions and you may be interested in stars. Exploring these topics interest are a great way to engage kids and adults in learning science because we enjoy it more. However, a good science education means that we learn all science fields and topics.
You can start exploring science by topic using either of our science by topic guides. One guide is for younger kids grades K-6. The second guide is for older kids grades 7-12 and adults. We organized these guides by fields of science and then topics within each field. For each topic, we provide a selection of science kits and science activity or project ideas. The science kits have instructions and all the science materials to start exploring that topic. The activities and project ideas are science articles to get you started exploring with science materials you already have available.
Select the guide that best fits your needs and start exploring any science topic of interest through real hands-on science discovery.
