DESCRIPTION

Discover how igneous rocks form from cooled molten rock in the rock cycle. This student rock set contains 15 igneous rocks, an educational guide, and a magnifying glass. Study geology and begin or expand your collection with these 15 igneous rock samples!

Some rocks form deep below the earth's surface, while others form above it. The environment deep inside the earth is so hot that part of the earth’s center is liquid (molten) rock, called magma.

Magma is the scientific word for melted rock. Magma forms when sedimentary, metamorphic, or igneous rocks deep within the earth get so hot that they melt. Magma that reaches the surface of the earth through a volcanic eruption is called lava.

Igneous rocks form when melted rock, magma or lava, cools. As it cools, it hardens into igneous rocks.
