Water crystal beads (also called water gel marbles) are the new rage to hit both the home decorating and educational science markets. These tiny superabsorbent polymer spheres are able to absorb up to 400 times their weight in water to form gel-like marbles. Just add water: mix 1 teaspoon (4g) of these small 2.5-3mm crystals to a quart of water, let it sit overnight, pour off the excess liquid, and you'll have over 2 cups of fascinating 10-15mm gel marbles. Besides being able to roll and bounce, these water crystal beads are nearly invisible in a glass of water and add beauty to a vase of cut flowers while helping to keep them fresh. By adding food coloring to the water, you can even change the color of your gel marbles!
With this pack, you get 10 grams of clear water crystal beads which is enough to make about a quart of fully hydrated water gel marbles. These are a copolymer of sodium acrylic acid and acrylamide. They go by many names, including crystal soil, water gel beads, flower gel, magic water beads, and crystal balls. It is non-toxic material but should be handled carefully as with all chemicals. Use water crystal beads carefully once they are mixed with water as they are extremely slippery. For best results use distilled water.
