Diagnosing Diabetes Kit

Become a doctor with this Diagnosing Diabetes Kit! In this 3-part lab, you'll use simulated blood plasma samples and a glucose tolerance test to determine if your fictitious patient has Type 1 or 2 diabetes.

With this Biology kit, you'll first learn about diabetes, and the role of insulin, to create a patient information sheet about diabetes, the difference between Type 1 and 2 diabetes, and the glucose tolerance test. You'll then analyze simulated blood plasma samples from your patient's glucose tolerance test (measuring both glucose and insulin levels) and will have the opportunity to plot and interpret the data. Finally, just like a real doctor, you must use your collected data to diagnose the patient and propose an effective treatment plan!

Each kit comes with a detailed teacher's guide and a complete student worksheet. Additionally, aside from safety goggles and a few common household items, all supplies needed to conduct the hands-on activities are included. No specialized lab equipment is required - making it a perfect learning activity for all types of schools and homes.

Time to complete: 2 Class Periods (about 40 minutes each) with homework
