Plant Science Kit: Grow, Observe, Experiment

Every mighty plant starts as a tiny seed, and this kit lets students see exactly how that transformation happens.

The adventure begins at the dissecting tray. Using forceps, scissors, and a magnifying glass, students open up real seeds to find the embryo, seed coat, and stored food inside, and learn what each part does to launch new life.

Then it's time to get their hands dirty. Students plant fast-growing radish and lima bean seeds and explore how soil, water, nutrients, and sunlight shape healthy growth. As plants develop, they'll watch roots, stems, and leaves take shape, then dissect a plant to see how each structure works.

Along the way, students measure, sketch, and record real data, and even design their own experiment to test what plants need most. It's a garden, a lab, and a science notebook all in one.

• Construction paper
• Cups
• Dissecting trays
• Forceps
• Magnifying glass
• Plant & Root Viewer
• Ruler
• Scissors
• Seed packets
• Soil

Hands-On Activities Include

• Seed dissection: Crack open a real seed and find the tiny plant waiting inside, then identify each part and what it does.
• Planting investigation: Plant and grow your own seeds while discovering how soil and nutrients fuel healthy growth.
• Plant dissection: Take a closer look at roots, stems, and leaves to see how each structure does its job.
• Growth tracking journal: Measure, sketch, and record your plants' progress over four weeks.
• Design your own experiment: Become the scientist! Choose a variable like water, light, or soil type, then test it and see what happens.

What They'll Learn

• What plants need to thrive: water, sunlight, soil, and space
• How plant structures work together to support growth
• How to spot and describe patterns as plants develop
• How to run simple investigations and record real data
• How to ask questions and reason through answers like a scientist

• NGSS science standards alignment
  • K-LS1-1: Use observations to describe patterns of what plants and animals (including humans) need to survive.
  • 2-LS2-1: Plan and conduct an investigation to determine if plants need sunlight and water to grow.
  • 3-LS1-1: Develop models to describe that organisms have unique and diverse life cycles but all have in common birth, growth, reproduction, and death.
