If you love to collect and investigate rocks of all kinds, you'll love adding this amazing tektite stone sample to your collection!
What is a tektite?
A tektite is a small, naturally glossy rock that is made from a meteorite impact. More specifically, tektites are made of black, gray, brown, or green (ex. moldavite is a green tektite) natural gasses. They are melted during meteorite impacts and essentially splashed into Earth's upper atmosphere, where they then harden, cool, and fall to the Earth's surface.
Where can you find tektites?
Tektites are only found in certain areas around the world. They can be found in what are called strewn fields, simply defined as regions on Earth's surface within which tektites of similar origin or age are found.
Tektite Types
- Microtektites (millimeter-scale tektites)
- Muong-Nong Tektites (typically larger; greater than 10 cm)
- Splash-form Tektites (shaped like microtektites but one million times larger; most are spheres)
- Australites (mostly black/dark tektites found in Australia in the Australasian Strewn Field; have disc & bowl shapes that are not seen in the other tektite types)
