Learn about internal and external snake anatomy with a snake dissection!

The species of this preserved snake specimen varies, but it is usually from the Genus Thamnophis (meaning it's a non-venomous garter snake). This snake specimen is not injected and is anywhere from 18-22" long.

A perfect hands-on activity for zoology or biology studies, snake dissections offer memorable learning experiences that reveal the amazing details of a snake skeleton and a snake's unique anatomy. As they dissect this snake specimen, students can begin to understand the intricacies of other snake species as well, such as rattlesnakes, ball pythons, pit vipers, and so many more.

In addition to this snake specimen, equip yourself for your snake dissection by also purchasing a Snake Dissection Guide, along with our Advanced Dissecting Tools SetYou can also dive into an exploration of amphibian anatomy with a frog dissection!

Note: Animal specimens are initially preserved with a formaldehyde/formalin solution, the best animal tissue fixative. The formaldehyde is then displaced first with water and finally with a glycol solution to produce a low-fume, wet specimen which will not decay over time.

HST Specimen Guarantee

In sealed, original packaging, our preserved specimens are guaranteed to remain fully preserved and free of decay for six months from the date of purchase.

Once the original package is opened, use specimen within one month. For best results, observe the following storage procedures:

  • Store specimen in heavy-duty, zip-lock bags to minimize drying between dissections.
  • Specimen will slowly dry out or become contaminated in zip-lock bags; add a teaspoon of Specimen Holding Fluid to retain moisture.
  • Freezing or refrigeration is not necessary and may damage fragile tissues.
