“I’m so glad I waited until the last minute to plan my homeschool year!”
Said no homeschool parent ever…
Yet, we understand that planning your homeschool year can be all too easy to put off. While it’s incredibly rewarding, homeschooling is hard work!
We understand the struggles and difficulties of homeschooling – along with its many joys and rewards – because we’ve done it. As we’ve confronted various pain points throughout the years, we’ve discovered several tricks and tips that make the wonderfully challenging job of a homeschooler a little easier. Check out our top five below!
1. Don’t reinvent the wheel
If a certain curriculum, schedule, or method worked for you in the past, don’t hesitate to use it again! If, on the other hand, you need guidance selecting a curriculum, understanding different learning styles, or are new to homeschool, we’re here to support you however we can. Make your life easier by leaning on and learning from the experiences and recommendations of homeschool vets like us.
2. Make a Schedule
As you map out your year, we recommend outlining your school year using a top-down approach. First, identify the number of days your state requires for homeschool each year (many require 180 days). Once you know this number, select which months of the year you’ll be homeschooling, and then block out any holidays, trips, appointments, and other conflicts. Using a one-page, 12-month calendar, you can then fill in specific school days and hours. This way, you can make sure you’ve scheduled enough school days, while also giving yourself visibility of your entire year as a whole!
3. Check for Subject Crossover
If you’ll be homeschooling multiple kiddos, decide which subjects you’d like each child to study, and then determine where/if there’s any crossover. Teaching the same subject to different ages at once isn’t always possible, but it can sure save you time when it is!
If adjustments are possible, take a little time to tweak and finalize your subject choices. If you discover that there’s little room for crossover between your kids’ subjects, rest assured. In our experience, younger students LOVE crashing their older siblings’ lessons in subjects they’re not yet studying (like science and reading). You may be surprised by what/how much they pick up!
4. Incorporate Affordable & Easy Experiential Learning
We all know that having the right tools and resources makes any job easier. But please hear us when we say this: equipping your family for your homeschool year can be done both AFFORDABLY and EASILY. Our customizable homeschool curriculum lab kits are one excellent way to do so. These kits have been designed to enrich your children’s learning and comprehension – while helping you avoid the exhausting goose chase of shopping for obscure supplies. They come with most of the needed materials to successfully conduct the hands-on labs in your homeschool curriculum of choice!
Independent of curriculum, we offer a diverse selection of complete one-box science kits that allow you to do engaging, hands-on labs in your home. Additional resources include our labware picture glossary – which will guide you to the items you’ll reuse year after year – as well as dozens of free printables filled with quick science tidbits!
5. Show Your Kids How FUN Learning Can Be!
Too often, words like “school” and “learning” are associated with boredom, rules, and from a student’s perspective, DREAD. Fortunately, learning doesn’t have to be a drab, boring experience for kids! As a homeschool parent, you can look for ways to make learning FUN, relevant, and engaging in your home. Here are just a few ways you might do so:
- Have your younger kids practice math by helping load or unload the dishwasher! They can practice their addition by counting and adding up the different items (forks + knives, etc.) going in or being put away.
- Incorporate science into your day with engaging edible projectsor by making fizzy bath bombs!
- Use Madlibs to reinforce parts of speech in hilarious & engaging ways!
