    Texas Education Freedom Accounts FAQ

    Texas Education Freedom Accounts™ (TEFA) is a funding program managed by the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts. The program was developed to give parents greater freedom and flexibility in choosing the best educational environment for their children.

    Students in pre-K through 12th grade who are U.S. citizens or lawfully present in the United States and are eligible to attend a Texas school district or open-enrollment charter school or pre-K program, including children of a parent who is an active-duty member of the U.S. armed forces. The parent must be a Texas resident.

    The Texas Education Freedom Accounts™ (TEFA) program application window opened on February 4, 2026, and closed on March 31, 2026. Over 274,000 applications have been received, and there is currently a waitlist.  

    You can sign up for updates regarding the 2027-2028 application period. 

    Once you find science kits, curriculum, and supplies for your student, log into the Odyssey marketplace. Search for “Home Science Tools” and find the products you’re looking for. You can complete your purchase of science kits and supplies from us through the marketplace using your TEFA wallet.  

    The following products are approved for purchase through the TEFA program:  

    • Microscopes  
    • Curriculum + lab kits (including Science Unlocked®)
    • STEM/robotics kits
    • Other educational materials (such as lab equipment and kits) 


    Yes, students of all ability levels may be eligible for the TEFA program. Find more information here.   

    Yes, students of all ability levels may be eligible for the TEFA program. An awarded child with a disability who is enrolled in a participating private school or in a pre-K or kindergarten program may be eligible to receive up to $30,000. To qualify, the child must have an individualized education program (IEP) on file with the Texas Education Agency by the end of the application period.
