Pathogens, Antibodies and Vaccines

The immune system protects us against bacteria, viruses and other invaders into our bodies. In this kit, students will learn all about the immune system, model antigen-antibody interaction and measure antibody levels in simulated patients who are either vaccinated or unvaccinated and exposed to a pathogen. This kit is a great introduction to vaccines and vaccine development and perfect for the budding virologist.

In this kit, students will learn about several concepts including

1. The immune system and its role in preventing disease
2. Antigens as proteins on the surface of pathogens
3. Antibodies, produced in white blood cells and how they attach to and destroy pathogens
4. Vaccines and how they trigger the production of antibodies and give your immune system a "memory" for pathogens you've been exposed to before

Complete this kit at home or in the classroom in three 40 minute sessions. Kit contains a detailed Teacher Guide and Student materials.

This kit includes:

• 3 Foam balls (to model bacteria)
• 3 Types of jewels (to model antigens)
• Glue dots
• Straws
• Clay
• Rubber bands
• Vaccination and immunization brochure
• Pertussis antibody test (simulated) instructions
• 4 Pertussis antibody test strips (simulated)
• 4 Tubes of simulated blood plasma

You will also need:

• Goggles
• Paper towels (for clean up)
• Colored pens or pencils (3 colors)
