Orange Juice Titration Kit

ONLINE INSTRUCTIONS:  Find your kit instructions on Science Buddies.

Run a real titration to measure the vitamin C hiding in your favorite fruits and vegetables.

Titration is a real lab technique chemists use to measure an unknown amount of a substance in a solution, and this kit includes the actual lab equipment: a burette, graduated cylinders, an Erlenmeyer flask, and the reagents needed to run an iodine titration. As the titrant reacts with the vitamin C in a sample, the solution changes color at the exact point where the reaction is complete, and that endpoint is what lets you calculate how much vitamin C was there to begin with.

This kit supports several different projects built around the same titration technique, so you can choose the question that interests you most.

Key Questions Students Explore:

• How does an iodine titration reveal how much vitamin C is in a solution?
• What does the color change at a titration's endpoint tell you about the reaction taking place?
• How can comparing titration results uncover differences in vitamin C, such as between fresh and stored produce or different brands of juice?

You will need to gather the specific produce called for by whichever project you choose along with a few basic supplies.  Check the specific linked instructions for each project for the full list.
